Continuing the tradition of short notice announcements, I'm giving everyone in North Texas a full 8 hours warning.

I'm presenting on Mono and Moonlight at the Dallas Tech Fest at 2:00p this afternoon.

Dallas Tech Fest is going to be a pretty cool event, so I'm sure you're already registered. Tim Rayburn and his fellow organizers have done an excellent job of assembling a diverse set of topics, as well as interesting speakers. The event will be going on all day today at the Addison Conference and Theatre Center.

If you need further incentive to attend the show (or at least my talk), the guys over at Telligent have given me access to a few Graffiti CMS licenses to hand out, in order to promote their support for Mono. If you want a copy (particularly if you're interested in running it on Mono), please come ask me for a copy in advance so I don't have to come up with some sort of quiz-show approach to handing them out during my talk.

Currently, I'm sitting in Boston Logan Airport, so I'm a little bummed that I'm going to miss out on hearing my good friend, Jason Hudgins, present on Android at 8:30a . If you make it out to the event earlier enough to catch his talk, I'm sure you'll be entertained by his Android Developer Challenge war stories, and perhaps he'll finally be willing to share some information about what they're doing over at his secretive Droid Works startup.

We made it to Massachusetts this week. Just in time, too. I signed up to present on Mono and Moonlight at Code Camp 9 here in Waltham, MA this weekend. (Just across the highway from the hotel I'm living in.)

Unfortunately, I know it's a little short notice for anyone that is reading this to come; however, if you're interested, I'll be speaking at 9:10 tomorrow morning. If you're in the area, but can't make it (or wake up) in time for my talk, I hope you'll swing by and say "Hi" to me sometime anyways. It looks like there are several other good talks scheduled over both days to make the event worth attending.

More events upcoming on the calendar soon. I'll make an effort to post about them with a little more notice.

NTLUG – One for the Road

At the end of this month, I'm moving to Massachusetts. I don't know where in Mass., or exactly when, but that doesn't really matter. Before the end of the month, the family and I will hop in the Element and head in a northeasterly direction until we get pretty darn close to the ocean. Or maybe we'll just keep driving on into New Hampshire. I haven't decided yet.

Anyways, upon the mention of my impending departure, my friends at the North Texas Linux Users Group invited me to present one more time before I get out of town. This time, I'll be showing the latest developments in Mono, with a focus on Linux users, rather than developers, and including a fair amount of Moonlight and openSUSE thrown in for good measure.

If you live in the DFW area and haven't attended the NTLUG, you should really consider checking it out. I began attending NTLUG meetings in October 2001, and have always had an enjoyable time. They're even really good about letting members present, if that's your cup of tea.

As an aside, they've met at the Nokia offices in Irving for as long as I've attended; however, February marked our last meeting at their facilities. I know I speak for my fellow NTLUG members when I say that we're extremely grateful for the 6+ years of hosting that they provided us.

IMPORTANT: For the next two months (including my presentation, 11:00am this Saturday, 3/15), we'll be meeting at the North Texas PC Users Group's facilities, which is actually the King of Glory Lutheran Church, near I-635 and Preston.

Which leads us to: If you have access to facilities in the DFW area that could host a Linux users group that draws in audiences of a few hundred from time to time, I'm certain the NTLUG would be very excited to hear from you.

Joseph Hill ...

This week, Miguel de Icaza, Geoff Norton, Michael Hutchinson, and I are headed out to San Francisco to man the Mono booth at the Game Developers Conference.

If you've been following the unfolding story on Miguel's blog then you may be aware that Mono provides some pretty interesting advantages over traditional embedded scripting engines.

Game Development with Unity

This has lead Mono to be used for handling game logic, AI, etc, in games and game engines, as well as simulations.

So, with all of the excitement this has drawn (primarily from Miguel's blog posts), we decided it would be worthwhile to engage the greater game developer community. If you are considering scripting options for your current or next game, or just want to figure out how to deal with your scripting performance problems, we hope you will swing by and say "Hi."

Also, there is a lot more functionality in Mono than just our runtime, so if you are at the GDC and want to discuss some other topics (for instance Moonlight or Mono on the Mac), we're happy to talk about those things, too.

If you're not going to be able to make it out to the conference, but are still interested in embedding Mono, you can read about Scripting with Mono, Embedding Mono, and Licensing Mono.

Joseph Hill ...

Updated Mono VM

Yesterday, we launched the updated Mono VM.

MonoDevelop running on the openSUSE 10.3 VM

This release includes several notable improvements:

It's based on openSUSE 10.3, which offers many improvements over 10.2 that have certainly been expressed elsewhere.

It comes in both VMWare image and Live CD form. This is thanks to the power of Kiwi, whose scripts have made the process much more repeatable. This should also allow future releases to more closely track Mono releases.

It includes many additional demo applications, including gbrainy, gnome-do, and several new ASP.NET 2.0 applications.

The inclusion of the above mentioned applications is made easy by the openSUSE build service. If you'd like to run any of the apps included on the image on your local machine, you should be able find them by adding the url to the Mono:Community on OBS repository for your distro to your system's package manager sources.

If you know of an open source Mono or .NET project you would like to see included on future images, the first step would be to get it packaged on the build service. Please let me know if you need help, or would just like to recommend an application.

With this release, the official images now provide everything that I wanted Mono Live to provide, and much more, so I'm relieved to no longer feel the weight of that project over my head.

Big thanks to Andrew Jorgensen for pulling this release together (and accepting all of my input from my initial attempt to do this work for Mono Live), as well as Thomas, Mark, Rusty, and Wade for their testing and feedback.

Joseph Hill ...

Just over four years ago, I downloaded Mono and began working with ASP.NET on Linux. Around that same time, I started Arc Focus as a .NET consulting firm focused on "developing for a cross-platform future".

In the years since, I've watched Mono grow more interesting each day, from enabling innovation on the Linux desktop with Gtk#, through the release of Windows.Forms, to the latest developments with Moonlight. During that same period, I've had the opportunity to participate in the Mono community in many exciting ways, including contributing to several open source and mixed-platform projects, as well as engaging the larger .NET, Linux, and open source communities.

While I've enjoyed the experience that working with Mono as an independent has brought, I recently was offered the opportunity to make my involvement with Mono more complete by joining Novell. Last week was my first week as the Product Manager for Mono. In the coming weeks and months, I look forward to working with members of the team at Novell, and in the greater Mono community, to help shape the future direction of Mono. If you'd like to discuss where things are going, or share your experiences or opinions, I'd like to hear from you. I'm jhill in #mono and elsewhere on IRC, as well as at novell.com

Joseph Hill ...

Surviving an Upgrade

This past weekend, I finally found some time to upgrade my severely outdated web server with the latest Mono (v1.2.5.1) and mojoPortal (v2.3.3.6). Prior to this weekend, it had been running Mono 1.1.18, with almost no reboots since installing that last year.

I have no physical access to this leased machine, and it originally came with Red Hat 9, so my only reasonable upgrade path has always been through Fedora. Over the years, I have upgraded it via yum a few times, but I was never quite willing to move from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4, largely because PostgreSQL data would not survive the upgrade without going through a backup and restore process that I was never in the mood to tackle. Unfortunately, Fedora 3 is way past EOL.

Long story short, this past weekend, I finally began the process of yum-ming my way through the various versions; however, after the pain of moving to Fedora 4, I decided I’d just go for broke and jumped straight to Fedora 7. I think I made the right decision. Everything seems to be working fine now.

I can’t believe how long I’ve had this underpowered box (since spring ’04). It has really run like a champ, but, what with it being leased and all, I can’t help but feeling that maybe it’s time move on. Maybe I’ll give that a thought before I try to make another trip to the yum well...

Joseph Hill ...

Had a great time at the Dallas Code Camp this past weekend. Overall, we had pretty good attendance, and we had a pretty good turnout at the Mono talk, as well. The really interesting thing this time around was the number of people at the event who actually use Mono. Several people with very good working knowledge of Mono attended the talk (including zbowling and wasabi from #mono), which added a lot to the conversation, and I even ran into a few more Mono fans over the course of the day that weren't able to make it to the talk. (I blame CodeRush for that.)

Update: By popular demand, I've posted my updated slide deck from the talks here. (A little lighter on details than previous slide decks, but, hey, we only had an hour).

Next week, I'm headed out to to attend StartUp Camp 2. Looks like it is shaping up to be a pretty cool event. Definitely different than the usual sort of events I attend, but I'm looking forward to the new experience. I'll be getting into SFO a day early, so suggestions for what to do downtown on a Sunday are greatly appreciated.

Joseph Hill ...
